Vegan Advice: Supplements + iHerb

Should you take vitamins and supplements as a vegan? Some people say that you should only get your vitamins through your diet and food. I used to be like this as well. It is very possible to get all of the necessary nutrients through food, even on a plant-based diet. However, incorporating vitamins into your routine can improve your health even more.

I avoided vitamins for around 6 months (as a vegan). My blood work was great and I didn’t have any deficiencies (even b12). But I had moved into my dorm and I noticed, I was more prone to sicknesses and I would get tired more easily. Even after adjusting how I ate (still vegan) , I still had the same “symptoms”. It could have been caused from stress or lack of sleep. I am not really sure what caused this, but incorporating certain vitamins/supplements helped tremendously.

The two vitamins I take on a regular basis are a multivitamin and a b12 vitamin (you could also take a b-complex). I take these everyday. There are some that I only take as needed. I take a vegan hair, skin, and nails supplement when I feel like my skin is too dry. I take l-lysine (as needed) for my hair and skin as well. My multivitamin has vitamin D in it, which is also important for most people to take.

Due to soil depletion, our soil is not as nutrient packed as it used to be and that is why more and more people should be taking vitamins (especially b12). I think it is super important for vegans and nonvegans to take some type of vitamin, especially if you are always busy like I am. I recently ordered some items off of iHerb that I wanted to share.

iherb 1iherb 2

I stocked up on my b12 vitamin and hair, skin, and nails supplement. I got a cruelty free cleanser, that I like so far. I also ordered a greens powder, which I have also been liking so far. Not all of these are necessary, but I do enjoy them. If you want 5% off you can use the code: KAL2060. You shouldn’t rely solely on vitamins for nutrition, but they can help immune support and improve your general health.

iHerb Review

I’m all about natural products. I’ve heard a lot about iHerb and I was always wanting to try it. I recently ran out of some beauty products and vitamins so I decided to finally browse iHerb. At first, I was a little overwhelmed by the website. There are so many products to choose from! The great thing is their website separates everything into categories and has a search option. It was incredibly easy to navigate through all of the supplements and beauty products.

I was pleased with their selection of products, everything I looked at was natural and cruelty-free. Everything was also reasonably priced. Ordering was simple and I received my purchase in about 3 days. Below are the products I ordered!

I haven’t used these products for long, but so far I am pleased. They’re fairly basic products. I take l-lysine for inflammation and skin problems and the rest are just beauty and hair products. My order was processed quickly and arrived in the mail shortly. Overall, I enjoyed ordering from iHerb and I plan to order again in the future.

How To Use Castor Oil

Castor oil is a vegetable oil that comes from pressing the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant. This oil is commonly found in beauty products and pharmaceuticals. I mainly use castor oil for skin care, but my mom says that it can also be used for digestion. Listed below are a few ways I like to use castor oil!

  1. Hair Care/Hair Growth: You can add castor oil to your shampoo and conditioner. I like to make a hair mask with castor oil and leave it in for about 15 minutes and then rinse out. Also, mixing coconut oil and castor oil can improve hair growth. I like to mix the two together and brush it through my eyebrows and eyelashes. If you have curly/coarse hair castor oil is a great way to add moisture.
  2. Makeup Remover: Castor oil easily breaks up makeup. I find it to be gentle on the skin and it removes eye makeup better than a traditional makeup wipe. I recommend thoroughly rinsing off your face afterward though because it might leave a residue.
  3. Other Skin Care Uses: Castor oil can be used on the face or the body. If you have acne prone or oily skin I would use castor oil with caution. I like to mix castor oil in my moisturizers when my skin is dry. Also, if I have dry patches on my knees or elbows I apply castor oil directly.
  4. Digestive Purposes: Castor oil can also be used to alleviate constipation (ew, I know). I personally have never done this, but apparently it is fairly common. Taking 1 tablespoon of castor oil can help ease constipation or stomach pain (takes about 4 hours to take effect).

Throwing Away Makeup

Well as you may have noticed, I am not really a beauty blogger anymore. I have made a lot of life changes recently, including: going vegan and decluttering my possessions (I’ll leave links to these posts at the end). Don’t worry, I am not completely getting rid of all my beauty products. But, I have been evaluating my “collection”.

This started when I switched to a more minimalistic perspective. I kept the products I used most and benefited from and donated or discarded the items that were not getting used. Then, I went vegan and evaluated more of my products. Slowly, but surely I am getting rid of non-vegan or non-cruelty free products. I do not want to waste though, so some of the products I will use up and then replace it with an alternative. For me, I don’t think beauty blogging is long-lasting.

I don’t want to be restricted to only reviewing and hauling beauty products. There are so many other things I want to write about that are more meaningful. It doesn’t bother me if other people keep massive amounts of makeup (or anything else really), but to me going through and minimizing my makeup has been positive. Getting ready in the morning is easier and stress-free. I believe in balance so I don’t think I would ever completely discard all of my makeup. In general, I don’t think you should ever restrict yourself too much. I hope this encourages you to declutter a bit!

Product Empties Part 3

Hello! If you read my last post about minimalism, you might be confused as to why I have more product empties. I am not buying more beauty products, but I am trying to use up all of the products I currently have. Getting that out-of-the-way, let’s jump into my product empties.

  1. Alba Botanica Deep Clean Astringent ~ I like the ingredients in this product and this really helps me when I have bad breakouts. Although, when my skin is clear I don’t prefer this because it is too harsh.
  2. Batiste Dry Shampoo (Tropical) ~ Love! Enough said.
  3. Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Cleansing Conditioner ~ In the winter my hair is extremely dry and I think this product is great for curly/coarse hair. This is one of the better cleansing conditioners I have used (also called co-wash). I will link my other reviews at the end of this post.
  4. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser ~ This is an old favorite. Great for sensitive skin and a very simple product.
  5. Hawaiian Tropic Face SPF ~ SPF is an essential part of skin care. This one is affordable and protects my skin. Sometimes it makes my skin a little greasy, but that is my only complaint.
  6. Skin Daily Serum ~ I purchased this on Amazon because it’s hard to find in stores. The ingredients are all natural and really nourish your skin. I used to have irritated cheeks and this soothed and healed my cheeks. I highly recommend this if you have red/irritated skin.

Mini Beauty Haul + First Impressions

Hello! Sorry for the late post, college has been stressful. I did a little retail therapy though and picked up a few new beauty items.

Wet n Wild Flat Top Brush

I have heard great things about their new brushes. I have only used this brush a few times, but so far I love it!

Eco Tools Perfecting Blender Sponge Duo

This is the closest drugstore dupe to the original beauty blender. I don’t know what else to say besides I just love it. I use these sponges for my concealer and they work great.

Covergirl The Super Sizer Fibers Mascara

This is one of the better mascaras I have tried. The only thing I don’t like about it is, it is very wet.

Flower Brow Master Mascara

I honestly think this product is great. I like the packaging and it gives a natural tint to my eyebrows and also shapes them.

Top 3 Drugstore BB Creams

Hello! I love BB creams and I look forward to trying new ones. I have tried so many from the drugstore and also higher end ones. Listed below are my favorite BB creams from the drugstore.

  1. Garnier Skin Active BB 5 in 1 Skin Perfecter. This is an OG favorite for me. I have been using this off and on since high school. It provides good coverage, has spf, and doesn’t irritate skin.
  2. Maybelline Dream Pure BB. This is good for when I have breakouts because it has salicylic acid in it. Again, this has good coverage and on me it stays fairly matte.
  3. L’Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB (Anti-Redness). This one is great for the winter when my skin is pink and dry. It covers my redness and blends nicely. Also, it looks great in photos! The one drawback to this is when you don’t have a lot of redness, the color doesn’t always match. So I only use this when my face is really pink.

Maybelline Brow Precise Micro Pencil Review

Hello All!

I feel like I am forever on the hunt for new brow products (new to me at least). I had recently finished my e.l.f eyebrow pencil and wanted to try another affordable eyebrow pencil. I went with the Maybelline Brow Precise Micro Pencil. I have heard mixed reviews about this, but I still decided to pick this up because of how narrow the pencil was. I have normal-thin eyebrows with a few sparse areas. I don’t like thick Instagram brows so I prefer a pencil with a finer tip.

This is one of the better brow pencils at the drugstore. The formula is bendable and easy to use. It’s great for filling in sparse/small areas and it won’t look too dramatic like some other brow products. The packaging is nice and it comes with a brush to come through your brows. A drawback is the amount of product you get. The product runs out fairly quickly, but it is affordable so it’s not a big deal. This seems to be a hit or miss to people, so for me it is a hit, but it might be a miss to someone else. Life is short though, you might as well try this!

Flower Beauty Brand Review

I admire Drew Barrymore so when I saw her makeup range at Wal-Mart (Flower Beauty), I freaked out. First off, let’s talk about the packaging! I love white and gold so I was immediately drawn to the products. There is a good range of items: lip glosses/lipsticks, tinted moisturizers and foundations, powders, and eye products. I was surprised by how large of a selection there was because usually celebrity brands only have a few products. I purchased the mattifying loose powder in Translucent and the eyebrow pencil in deep brown.

I have read positive reviews about the loose powder so I decided to purchase it. I got the mattifying one and there is also an original. I used this in my t-zone and I stayed matte for the entire day and so far it has not caused irritation to my skin. It doesn’t give me a white flashback so that’s always good. The packaging is sleek and attractive. If you are wanting to try out this brand, I recommend picking this up!

I additionally purchased the eyebrow pencil. To me, this was an okay product. I thought it did the job, but I do not like bold brows. If you have thicker eyebrows, this would be a great buy because the tip is thicker. The shade is cool toned so it’s not going to look red and it’s not too waxy or stiff.

In general, I think this brand is awesome! It is affordable and the products are quality and the packaging is terrific. I am still experimenting with the products, but I am loving the brand so far. Also, all of the products are cruelty free! If you are at Wal-Mart, I suggest you give Flower Beauty a try!
